Best WordPress Forum Plugins in 2026: 8 Options Compared
The best WordPress forum plugin depends on the size and shape of your community. For most new sites, we would start with Jetonomy (forum plus Q&A in one plugin). For a small, simple board, bbPress or Asgaros Forum is enough. For a full social network with groups and activity, a community platform fits better than a forum plugin alone.
Below is our 2026 list of WordPress forum plugins: what each does well, where it falls short, and who should pick it. We are the team at Wbcom Designs, and we build Jetonomy, so you will see it near the top. We have also installed, migrated away from, and sometimes back to most of the others on real client sites, so we have tried to be fair about where Jetonomy is not the right pick.
If you want a head-to-head comparison of the three most common choices, read our deeper post: bbPress vs wpForo vs Jetonomy. This page is the wider list.
What is the best WordPress forum plugin in 2026?
There is no single winner, so here is the short answer by situation:
- Starting a new community, and you want forums and Q&A: Jetonomy.
- Small forum, simple needs, free: bbPress or Asgaros Forum.
- Established forum that wants a mature commercial add-on ecosystem: wpForo.
- Members, groups, activity feed and a forum: a community platform such as BuddyPress, BuddyBoss or BuddyNext, with a forum plugin alongside.
- Forum is the whole product and you can run a separate server: Discourse.
- Only Q&A, never a forum: CM Answers, or the Q&A space in Jetonomy.
How we ranked these forum plugins
A “best forum plugin” depends on what your community needs to do. We looked at six things:
- Growth: does it stay usable as topics and members pile up?
- Features: forums, Q&A, ideas, threaded replies, voting.
- Look: does it fit a modern WordPress theme without hours of CSS?
- Moderation: how much manual work falls on your moderators?
- Developer options: REST API, hooks, template overrides.
- Upkeep: is someone still shipping updates? We checked the WordPress.org listings for update dates in October 2026, and dropped anything closed.
Which WordPress forum plugins are worth using? (the list)
1. Jetonomy: forum plus Q&A in one plugin
Free + Pro · By Wbcom Designs · Download from jetonomy.org
Jetonomy is the newest plugin on this list and the one we use for new community projects. It is built for forums, Q&A, ideas boards and feeds in a single plugin, so you do not stitch three plugins together.
What it does well:
- Its own database tables. Forum content does not sit in the regular posts and post meta tables, which is where older forum plugins tend to slow a site down as it grows.
- Four space types. Forum (threaded discussion), Q&A (with accepted answers), Ideas (members vote and you show a roadmap), and a Show & Tell feed. You can mix them on one site.
- Trust levels. New members start with limits, and earn more freedom by posting, being active and building reputation. Moderators and admins can be granted the higher levels.
- Moderation tools in the free plugin. A moderation queue, flagging and reporting, anti-spam and bans.
- Search, tags and voting in the free plugin, plus a REST API for developers.
- Importers for bbPress, wpForo and Asgaros. Old forums become spaces, and topics and replies come across. Test on a staging copy first. The importers do not build redirect maps, so plan redirects yourself.
- Structured data for Q&A. The free plugin outputs the markup search engines use for question pages.
Where it is weaker:
- It is new, so there are fewer third-party tutorials and add-ons than for bbPress.
- Growth features (reactions, polls, badges, analytics, AI moderation, email digests, private messaging) are in Pro.
- It is not in the WordPress.org directory, so you download it from the Jetonomy site and manage a license key for Pro.
Best for: new communities, support forums, knowledge-base style Q&A, and sites replacing bbPress. Skip it if you run a small, stable bbPress forum that has no problems.

2. bbPress: the original, still maintained
Free · Maintained by WordPress contributors
bbPress is where most WordPress forums start. It is free, it comes from the WordPress community, and the WordPress.org listing shows an update in late October 2026 and over 100,000 active installs, so it is alive and well.
What it does well:
- Completely free, with no paid version.
- Stable, and uses the normal WordPress user system.
- Works naturally with BuddyPress.
- A very large ecosystem of tutorials, add-ons and developers who know it.
Where it falls behind:
- It stores topics and replies as regular WordPress posts, which can slow down very large forums.
- No built-in Q&A with accepted answers, ideas boards or trust levels.
- Block themes usually need some CSS to make bbPress look right.
- Moderation is basic: pending, published, spam.
Best for: small forums and sites already on BuddyPress. Skip it if you expect thousands of topics or need Q&A. Our bbPress review goes deeper.
3. wpForo: the mature commercial alternative
Free + paid add-ons · By gVectors
wpForo has its own database tables, several layouts and a long-running roadmap. The WordPress.org listing shows version 3.2.2 updated in September 2026 and 20,000+ active installs.
What it does well:
- Its own tables, so no post-meta bloat.
- Several layouts, including a Q&A style.
- Built-in user ranks and reputation.
- Paid add-ons for things like private messages, polls and custom fields.
Where it hurts:
- It keeps its own look, so matching your theme takes CSS work.
- Many extras are separate paid add-ons, so the total cost grows as you add them.
- Ranks do not limit what new members can post, as trust levels do.
Best for: established forums that want a proven plugin and a big add-on list.
4. Asgaros Forum: the lightweight pick
Free + premium add-ons
Asgaros is what we suggest when someone says “a bbPress alternative, but simpler.” The WordPress.org listing shows version 3.5.0 updated in October 2026 and 10,000+ active installs.
- Good: small footprint, clean admin screens, its own database tables, a free version that is genuinely usable.
- Weaker: intentionally small feature set. No Q&A mode, ideas board or advanced moderation, and the developer options are limited.
Best for: club forums, hobby groups and internal team boards. Skip it if you need Q&A or analytics.
5. BuddyBoss Platform: the all-in-one social option
Paid
BuddyBoss is not mainly a forum plugin. It is a full community platform (profiles, groups, activity, messages) with a forum layer, and it sells its own theme and mobile app options. It suits membership sites that want everything from one vendor.
- Good: a complete social platform in one package, and a polished design.
- Weaker: it is paid, you commit to its stack, and the forum layer is based on bbPress, so it shares bbPress’s limits.
Best for: a full social community with budget. Skip it if you only need a forum.
6. Discourse with the WordPress plugin: forum software outside WordPress
Open source (self-hosted) or hosted plans · By Discourse
Discourse is excellent forum software, but it is a separate application on its own server. The WP Discourse plugin (version 2.6.4, updated August 2026 on WordPress.org) connects it to WordPress for single sign-on and publishing topics.
- Good: best-in-class forum features and a strong mobile experience.
- Weaker: separate hosting, separate admin, separate user data. The bridge between the two sites is one more thing to keep working.
Best for: communities where the forum is the product and you have technical help. Skip it if you want the forum inside your WordPress site.
7. Simple:Press: the long-running classic
Free + paid add-ons
Simple:Press has been around almost as long as bbPress. It is still updated (version 6.11.15, September 2026 on WordPress.org), with 300+ active installs listed.
- Good: its own database tables, a detailed permission system, many shortcodes.
- Weaker: the design and admin feel dated, and the user base is small.
Best for: sites already running it. For a new project, start with one of the options above.
8. CM Answers: Q&A only
Free + Pro · By CreativeMinds
CM Answers does Q&A and nothing else. WordPress.org shows version 3.4.3 updated in October 2026, with a small install base (300+).
- Good: accepted answers, voting and categories, with a simple setup if you do not want a forum.
- Weaker: no discussion forum, so you would need a second plugin later.
Best for: pure Q&A sites that will never add forums.
A plugin we removed: DW Question & Answer
Our earlier version of this list included DW Question & Answer. WordPress.org closed it in 2022 for a security issue and it has not returned, so we dropped it. Do not install it.

How do I choose a WordPress forum plugin?
Answer these four questions in order:
- Do you need more than a forum? If members also need profiles, groups and a feed, pick a community platform first (see our look at BuddyNext or the BuddyPress alternatives list) and add a forum on top.
- Do members ask questions that need one right answer? Choose a plugin with accepted answers: Jetonomy, CM Answers, or wpForo’s Q&A layout.
- How big will it get? Under a few hundred topics, almost anything works. Past a few thousand, prefer plugins with their own tables.
- Who will maintain it? If you have no developer, choose the plugin with the least CSS work to match your theme and the clearest admin screens.
Whatever you pick, set it up on a staging copy first. Our guide to types of online communities helps you decide which shape fits yours, and building a private community covers the access side.
How do I create a forum on WordPress?
- Pick a plugin from the list above.
- Install and activate it. Most free ones install from Plugins > Add New. Jetonomy installs from the zip you download from its site.
- Create your first forum or space. Give it a clear name and a short description of who it is for.
- Decide who can post. Open registration is simple, but turn on spam protection and approval for new members.
- Match the look. Check the forum on a phone and in dark mode if your theme has it. Fix colors and fonts before launch.
- Seed it. Post five to ten real questions or topics yourself so visitors do not land on an empty room.
- Set moderation rules. Write short community rules and decide who moderates.
What is the best free WordPress forum plugin?
bbPress, Asgaros Forum and the free Jetonomy plugin are all real, usable free options. bbPress is free with no paid tier. Asgaros has a usable free version with optional paid add-ons. The free Jetonomy plugin includes forums, Q&A, ideas, trust levels, search and moderation, with growth features sold separately in Pro. If budget is the main limit, start with bbPress or Asgaros for a small board, or Jetonomy free if you want Q&A.
Can I move from bbPress or wpForo without losing content?
Usually yes, but treat it as a project, not a click. Jetonomy ships importers for bbPress, wpForo and Asgaros. Back up your site, run the import on a staging copy, check a sample of old topics, then repeat on the live site. Do not assume your old URLs will redirect: plan redirects separately. If you would rather have a team do it, our services page lists what we offer.
Frequently asked questions
Is bbPress still good in 2026?
Yes, for small and medium forums. It is still updated and widely used. It is a weaker fit if you need Q&A with accepted answers, trust levels or a modern look without extra CSS.
Does BuddyPress include a forum?
No. BuddyPress adds profiles, activity and groups. Historically it paired with bbPress for forums, and you can pair it with other forum plugins too.
Is there a WordPress plugin like Stack Overflow?
Yes. Look for accepted answers and voting. Jetonomy’s Q&A space, CM Answers and wpForo’s Q&A layout all do this.
Will a forum plugin slow down my site?
It can, mostly on large forums. Plugins with their own database tables handle growth better than those storing everything as posts. Good hosting and an object cache help with any of them.
Do I need a separate server for a forum?
Only for Discourse. Every other plugin here runs inside your WordPress site.
Should I choose a forum plugin or a full community plugin?
Choose a forum plugin if conversation is the point. Choose a community platform if people also need profiles, groups and a feed. Many sites use both, for example BuddyNext for the social layer and Jetonomy for structured discussion.
